Herb Smith is the leader of his own Jazz quartet, third trumpet in the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, trumpet instructor at the Eastman School of Music, music teaching artist, music arranger and composer. Herb graduated from the Eastman School of Music in 1991, and upon graduating he acquired the 2nd trumpet position with the Rochester Philharmonic for 2 years. After years of living in Rochester, freelancing, teaching, and being extra in the orchestra, Herb finally landed as being Third trumpet in the Orchestra permanently. He has played with the Cincinnati Symphony, Buffalo Philharmonic, the Chautauqua Symphony, Skaneateles Summer Festival Orchestra, and the Gateways Music Festival Orchestra. Herb has written music for silent films, was the music director on the CD "Just A Little Sly" for his former band Thornwood, and in 2006 he performed a joint recital with Eastman Baritone, Derek Smith, in Carnegie Hall. At that performance he premiered his composition for Baritone, trumpet, and piano entitled "The Twelve Tones Of Christmas." Herb has a trumpet studio at the Eastman Community Music School and is a certified instructor for the Jerome Callet method, Master Super Chops. You can see and hear him demonstrate the method on the new Master Superchops DVD and on Jerry's website www.super-chops.com. Herb also does a lot of work in schools. He plays in the New Millenium jazz quartet formed specifically for school programs through Young Audiences, he plays in the RPO jazz combo in many of the Rochester City Schools, and he has a blues project that he does through The Commission Project. Herb has played with many notable performers, Natalie Cole, Doc Severinson, Wynton Marsalis, Chuck Mangione, The Ojays and Yes to name a few. Herb has recorded with Big Roots, the Rochester Philharmonic, Gap Mangione Big Band, Joel Segal, and the Eastman Wind Ensemble. Herb's new CD, "The Trumpet Shall Sound" is finished and will be in stores very soon. Herb is available for any engagement or event, from a duo to a big band, for music, arranging, clinics and or seminars.
